Several people have been telling me lately that they are eating a Paleo diet, which is something similar to eating like a caveman. If the food wasn't around in the REALLY OLD days and is processed you don't eat it. There are quite a few versions of that diet, depending on personal interpretation. I suppose it could be healthy is you were just eating fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and meats, but some say they eat only raw foods and raw milk...and God forbid raw meat. Others use it as an excuse to eat tons of meat just like they did with the Adkins diet. I really don't think the cavemen had meat three times a day. I have also been hearing celiacs say they are eating a GRAIN-FREE diet. Well, gluten-free is hard enough thank-you. Eventually you fall off these fad diets.
I do believe in moderation in our diets, and not eliminating any food groups. Some foods we should be eating more of like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Others we should be having less of such as meats and fat. Sugar and processed foods are in the category of less, but we actually would be perfectly fine with NONE.
I think with the horrible heat and drought conditions this year, grain prices will be very high next year. But have you thought about the meat prices? To make a pound of beef we use 10 times more grain than it would take to feed a person on grain. Meat is already very expensive. For several years now my husband and I have gotten used to using a package of meat for two or three meals. One of my most popular blogs was Pork Tenderloin three meals. Next time, instead of dumping the whole package into the pan, use half or a third. Throw some beans or potatoes in with your taco meat. If you always throw out the wings and back of the chicken three days after roasting, cut them off before cooking and save for soup.
Instead of buying a turkey breast I bought a small package of (4) raw turkey breast slices. I chopped and cooked one for a salad and cooked the other three for another supper. I browned it in a skillet with a little olive oil, salt, pepper, onion powder and poultry seasoning, and turned it down, cooking for a few minutes on each side until it was no longer pink in the middle. You can add a little water. I removed the turkey to a plate and added a Tblsp of rice flour and cooked it for a minute. I then added a packet of Herb Ox sodium free chicken bouillon and a little milk and water, simmering until thick. Pour the gravy over the turkey and serve with cauliflower mashed potatoes (my next recipe).
